Asparagus: Vizzarri Farms and Delica Pty Ltd
Delica Pty Ltd was established in 1994 by Murray McCallum and the Vizzarri family. This was the beginnings of the “Delica Group” and Delica’s close connection to asparagus exports from Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Peru.
The Vizzarri family moved into Koo Wee Rup (the greater Melbourne area) in 1981 where they started packing broccoli for the local Australian market. Due to the uncertainty of supply of product the decision to go into asparagus growing was made in the late 1980s when the family began acquiring more farmland. Steady growth and expansion over the years has resulted in the Vizzarri operation becoming one of the most dynamic horticultural enterprises in the area.
Of Vizzarri’s roughly 3000 tonnes of asparagus produced every year, Delica exports up to 1200 tonnes of this per year. Delica has gone on to become one of the two largest asparagus export companies in Australia. The growth of both companies since Delica Pty Ltd inception has seen Vizzarri farms expand across 26 properties totalling 1900 acres and seen Delica asparagus exports peak at over 2000 tonnes per year in 2001.
Delica Pty Ltd continues today and remains a dominant asparagus exporter from Australia to Japan and Asia. Vizzarri Farms are Australia’s largest asparagus grower/packer and supply asparagus all year around to retail - importing asparagus from Delica’s Peru operation from March until September.
